Let the moon shine on my sleepy head
Let the tears freeze on my icy sheets
When my shadow looms on your bedroom wall
Feel a cold hand slide across your cheek
Rolling underneath the skin
My eyes, like marbles, spin
Have you ever seen a dream walking?
When the sky turns to lead and the TV's gone dead
And you've backed off to bed, then I'm stirring
When your face turns to porridge and your breath is damp silage
And your brain's in cold storage — I rise
Have you seen shapes at your vision's edge?
Do you want me for the things I see?
When the first light hits your stiffened limbs
And you think you're free you'll remember my
Face, a pallid canvas where your
Fears are clearly mapped
Have you ever seen a dream walking?
I'm the queen in your closet, the self you disown
And I'm out there alone to betray you
I don't know where I'm walking, you can't stop me from talking
And everybody's watching.
Have you ever seen a dream walking?

The Genius

He walked through my door
On the darkest of nights
His eyes were like crepe
His lips they were white
He must have been lonely or
Needing ta talk
But he said one word only
Then looked at the clock
So I took off his coat
And I touched the lapel
Where the cheek of a lover
Had left a faint smell
He said he was misunderstood by the world
When I said he was too aloof, he replied,
"I didn't ask for my gift -
It was forced on me, don't you see?"
Then he bragged of his travels
His destiny's call
He had strong opinions
I disagreed with them all
Something piercing the air
With a hollow dry scream
Had broken the ice
And turned it to steam
The lamplights of Bagdad
Were burning for away
Golden embers showered
On our bodies as we lay
The ceiling got lower
I pushed him away
"Sex," he said, "is one swollen sack
Emptying into another."
Without further word
I fell fast asleep.
Counting sheep.
Little white sheep.

Second Coming

Waiting for the message to come
The handshake from deepest space
Pressing to the headset all night
For alien's faintest breath
Hoping for a biped to come
Untangling human doubt
Searching through the static all night
For signals that make some sense.
Will they tell whatever the pyramids meant?
Did we evolve or were our chromosomes sent?
Will they find our brain pans a fraction too small?
Do the labyrinths we've created lead nowhere at all?
Here we are in Mississippi
Tracking down a swamp gas saucer
Television cameras glowing
Somewhere in the middle of the prairie on a summer night
The natives gather 'round, hoping for a sight.
When the locusts cast dark shadows
When the men of conscience weaken
When the preachers spread their panic -
Armageddon draws us near its gaping mouth and
Whispers that the universe isn't benign.
Crashing through a telephone booth
To put in a call to Christ
Looking for a sign in the sky
Ezekiel's wheels on high
Waiting for a savior to come
To rescue us from the brink
Quoting from the scientists’ logs
Defending our oldest wish.
(REFRAIN)
Tiny needle in a haystack
Alf its signals weak and garbled
Conjuring its myths and dreaming
Somewhere in the middle of the galaxy
Our capsule floats, boasting the image of MAN.
